Bradford is a city found in West Yorkshire and sits in the foothills of the Pennines, a countryside area famous for being the genteel backdrop of several Bronté sisters’ novels, such as Pride and Prejudice.
Historically, Bradford was an industrial revolution boomtown in the area of textiles and was considered the wool capital of the world. As a result the city boasts a large number of listed Victorian buildings and industrial heritage sites. Bradford was also named the first UNESCO City of Film.
Its population of over 525,000 is widely diverse, though in recent times it has been the scene for tension. In 1989 copies of “The Satanic Verses “by Salman Rushdie were burnt in the city, and a section of the Muslim community led a campaign against the book. In July 2001, ethnic tensions led to rioting, and a Government report described Bradford as “fragmented”, and “a city of segregated communities”.
