Situated on the Leeds-Liverpool canal, the town of Wigan is also known as Mill Town, having supported a great number of textile mills in bygone times. Wigan was also immortalised by George Orwell in the novel “The Road to Wigan Pier” in 1937, a documented essay on the condition of working class conditions in the area. Wigan also has historical notes within the porcelain and clock-making industries and several old buildings and monuments celebrating these vintage roots available for tourists.
Wigan is also the home of the DW Stadium, home to both 2013 FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic football club, and the most successful Rugby League team of all time, the Wigan Warriors.
