Truck Rental at How to hire a van

Hiring a van can be a doddle, and if you’ve ever hired a car then you’ll be glad to know that hiring a van is very much the same.

The main difference (besides the size of the vehicle) is that all van rental companies have different restrictions. Particularly for younger people, or anyone who has only recently passed their driving test, it can be tricky to find a rental company that’s right for you.

This short guide will help you find the right provider for your van, and walk you through the steps for a successful and enjoyable van hire experience.

Documents

Before you consider hiring a van, you will need to have a full, valid drivers’ license for at least 1 year. Some companies need you to have held your license for longer, while some have strict penalty points’ limits.

Our van hire comparison chart compares all major van rental company requirements so you can choose the one that’s right for you.

Most providers also require a major credit card for payment, deposit and proof of identity. You can get by with some companies with your debit card, but a credit card can make the process much easier.

It will also mean you can pay online – getting yourself a discount into the bargain!

Days and Dates

Before you can get a quote from any company you’ll need to have some idea of the dates that you’ll need the van. You can always chop and change these around (especially if you’re looking for the best deal) but having in mind how many days you’ll need the van can save you a lot of hassle.

Type of van

Your ideal van will depend on just how much, or how big, your load will be. A practical van for most situations is a short wheel base panel van (such as a Ford Transit or similar) but if you’re not sure, you can use our Van Types guide to help decide the best one for you.

Compare prices for any van with our van hire comparison tool. This clever bit of kit searches all providers for the van you want, making sure you get the best deal every time!

Hire!

Once you’ve got your provider, the date and the van sorted, you can reserve (and pay) online in just a few clicks and a form. Some providers also have optional extras, like sat-nav, child seats or moving supplies to select from, or additional insurance cover that can limit any excess in the event of damage. Select any additional items and confirm your quote.

Congratulations! You’ve hired a van! What now?
