UK Residents

All vehicle drivers need to show their full and valid U.K. driver’s license, which must have been held for at least 12 months.

If the license is the older style paper copy, an official photographic ID must also be presented.

If the license is the modern photo & document style, both parts must be presented.

If the license does not include the main drivers’ current home address, a valid passport or national identity card must be presented.

If a driver has been banned from driving for a serious offence (DD, DR, UT) or has been disqualified for 12 months or more, Thrifty will only rent once a 5 year period after the license was returned.

2 other forms of ID should also be presented to confirm the home address of the main driver. One must be a credit card or debit card statement for the card used for payment of the rental. The other should be a formal document (e.g. utilities bill). Both documents must be original and should be dated no more than 8 weeks prior to the rental.

Non-UK Residents

Any non U.K. residents wanting to hire a van with Thrifty must produce the passport or national identity card used to enter the U.K.

The main driver should also show their driving license from their country of residence. If the license is not a European license and / or is not in English, a full English translation is also required. Any additional drivers should also provide their driving license and English translation (if required).

The credit card used for payment should also be in the name of the main driver and needs to be shown, as well as travel documentation confirming their U.K. arrival and departure dates.

Insurance

Thrifty insurance covers the main and any authorised additional drivers for damage or theft.

You can reduce the excess to £250 by taking the optional DLR (Damage Liability Reduction) which costs an additional:

£16 per day (1-3 day hires)

£12 per day (14+ day hires)

As a further option you can select Glass and Tyre cover which will remove any liable excess due to glass or tyre damage (when not part of a larger repair):

£7 per day (1-3 day hires)

£6 per day (4-13 day hires)

£5 per day (14+ day hires)
