Truck Rental at Student and First Timers
Can I rent a van as a student?
As long as you satisfy the age and driving license criteria, any student can hire a van. Some van hire companies offer students exclusive deals on their van hire, saving money!
Unfortunately if you are below 25 then a young driver surcharge (an additional fee) will have to be included in your rental quote.
Only a few rental companies offer to rent vans to younger age groups. The ones who do are:
Thrifty (21+). Restrictions: SWB (short wheel base) vans only below 25 years, driving license 1+ year
Sixt (21+). Restrictions: SWB (short wheel base) vans only below 25 years, driving license 1+ year
Europcar (22+). Restrictions: driving license 3+ years
Budget (23+). Restrictions: driving license 1+ year
Hertz (23+). Restrictions: driving license 3+ years
Sixt: Students can enter the promotional code SIXTE011 when you book online. You’ll save 10% on your van hire quote.
Hertz: If you are still studying and aged over 23 years you can take advantage of a 20% discount on van hire (based on the best Hertz rate available). This offer also reduces the young driver surcharge to £30.84 per day, with a maximum of £308.40. Van models included are:
Vauxhall Combo Van
Ford Transit Connect
Ford Transit 280 SWB
If you do not qualify for van hire, you can always enlist an older friend or family member as the main driver.
If it’s your first time hiring a van you might be nervous about it. To put you at ease, most modern vans handle the same as your average car, so driving them is just as easy.
You’ll get conveniences and safety features such as power steering, powerful diesel engines and anti-lock brakes. The dashboard will be familiar too.
You should take a little more care when driving a van, as they are likely larger and heavier than what you are used to (especially when fully loaded).
